Parks, Recreation & Open Space Master Plan

MHS partnered with the City of Missouri City to develop a Parks, Recreation & Open Space Master Plan 2021 – 2031. This plan was unique and developed under two separate contracts in different fiscal years to assist the City in specific budgeting needs. 

The inventory, public engagement, and goals & objectives were all developed, followed by the needs, recommendations and implementation schedule.

Takeaways

The importance of defining Park Districts. The City wanted to establish Park Districts throughout the community to ensure there was equitable access to the Parks System. MHS worked with the community and City Staff to create Park Districts, and the City currently utilizes this for budgeting and planning for the enhancement of the Parks System. 

The importance of ensuring all districts have or are planned to have a neighborhood park. The City wants for all community members to have access to a neighborhood park within a 10-minute walk from their home. The Park Districts allow the City to identify gaps and propose improvements to address these needs. 

The importance of developing site-specific master plans for parks to establish a vision and identity for the park. MHS worked with City Staff and the community to develop a conceptual plan for the re-development of Sta-Mo Sports Park and reimagined the park as a regional Sports Park including a wide variety of organized and unorganized sports.
